Valentine’s Day. It’s not everyone’s favourite holiday, but there is a number of silver linings. All that emphasis on love is a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with the one you’re closest to- yourself- and show yourself some love. Also, all that eye-rolling at the cards and truly hideous soft toys in the stores has to burn calories, doesn’t it?
Treating yourself is a healthy sign of self-respect. Some of our favourite projects at My Beautiful Abode are working with women (usually) to create a space for themselves, a personal sanctuary where their own personal style reigns supreme with no concession to the people they share their home with. It may be a room of one’s own (and who can argue with Virginia Woolf at the importance of this), a bathroom or even a gorgeous corner in a living room that is a space that is unashamedly and unabashedly you.
We think it’s incredibly important for people to invest in themselves by creating a space that’s not communal, a haven within the every day. Here’s some quick ways to show yourself some love with the power of interiors:

Florals and foliage are the perfect love gift to yourself. Skip the roses though, and go for something soft and luscious from your florist. Or perhaps pick up a mix of flowers, and some greenery from your garden and put together your own beautiful arrangement in your favourite vase. If you don’t have a favourite, go buy one, tout suite. It’s another gorgeous gift to yourself.
Candles are a relatively inexpensive way to treat yourself- place a candle on a side table, but don’t leave it for show. Burn that baby!
Comfort and function is a must in a space of one’s own. We recently styled a bedroom with a corner featuring a divine chair with oversized arms that serve as the perfect resting spot to balance that early morning coffee, and early evening glass of wine.
Linen is a beautiful way to show yourself some love, be it through stunning sheets that make it really, really hard to leave bed on a Sunday morning, or through stylish pillows, and soft rugs. Seriously, why spend $100 on a dozen red roses, when you could have a showstopper cushion? No contest!
We love colourful, feminine spaces with pastel palettes, stylish pillows, photos upon photos and textural touches, however the most important factor we consider when planning a space that is designated for pure indulgence is that it reflects the owner’s personality. What do you want your space to signify? Glamour, elegance, style, relaxation, sanctuary?
Who is it in your life that most deserves some indulgence, not just for Valentine’s Day, but on a daily basis? Yes, it’s you! We’d love to help you create your sanctuary from the every day- please get in touch and just like that *snaps fingers* you’ll be in a beautifully styled room/nook/corner of your own.
