When we think of home, we think of a sanctuary from the world- in fact, that’s the whole design ethos behind My Beautiful Abode.

We create spaces that are beautiful and inviting, that are not overly precious, spaces for living in.

Taking care of yourself is the most important part of successfully managing your mental health and wellbeing according to Beyond Blue. We know this, but putting into action can be easily overlooked. Sometimes our clients, particularly busy working mums, crave a sanctuary within the sanctuary, and there are easy ways to create what Virginia Woolfe called a ‘room of one’s own’.

Here are some ideas you can implement at home:

  • Let’s start with the idea that your sanctuary at home doesn’t always have to be a physical space, although we do love the thought of banishing the kids from one section of the house (read about our nook story here). Think laterally; take something often (misguidedly!) considered as an indulgence or attached to an occasion such as buying fresh flowers and make it a regular source of enjoyment for very little outlay.  Why not add flowers to your next grocery shop, or select something beautiful from your florist?
  • In the same vein, lighting candles, essential oils or the sound from a water feature can add that calm and mindfulness you may be seeking in your home. The scents and sounds in your home can dramatically change how you feel in the space.

  • Carving out a sanctuary within your home can be claiming the ‘good’ room and turning it into your space. While this space can still be beautiful, it’s not a showcase to be viewed. The idea is that it’s a space you want to be in and are happy to use, a space to be lived in and enjoyed. Comfortable furniture that you can hang out in with your friends, or retreat to read a book or catch up on your news feed. The quiet space where you can retreat to watch your shows (in Sophie’s case it’s home decorating shows, which shouldn’t surprise you!) sounds like a slice of heaven right?
  • We have clients who have turned their bedroom into their sanctuary, selecting colours that soothe for the furnishings and art. We have indulged in beautiful luxury materials for the space and intentionally planned that this space is a private oasis. Often in new homes the Master bedroom has a ‘parents retreat’ space designed into the room and this can be a beautiful place to add a sitting area or a daybed and a beautiful quiet nook.

How have you made a sanctuary within your sanctuary? We’d love to hear how you have created your pocket of bliss.
