Do you have a view that you wish could be more inspiring? Perhaps you’re looking out at a row of mid-century flats, the neighbour’s bathroom, or a blank wall. What if you could replace that with a serene ocean scene, a dense rainforest, or a field of Australian Mountain Ash? With the help of talented Australian artists, you can create a captivating view right within your home, regardless of what’s outside your window.

Borrowed landscape: The art of enhancing spaces

The concept of a “borrowed landscape” is one often explored in design school. It refers to the idea of integrating the view beyond your window into your interior space. This might mean incorporating a neighbour’s blossoming jacaranda or the sight of a distant mountain range. However, not everyone has the luxury of an inspiring view, and that’s where art comes into play. By carefully selecting and placing artwork that echoes natural landscapes, you can borrow the sense of nature and tranquillity that such views provide, even in the heart of a city.

Bringing nature indoors

One of our clients, who grew up on a farm in coastal Victoria, reached out to us after seeing our work online. She wanted to recreate the sense of openness and connection to nature that she experienced in her rural upbringing, but within her urban master bedroom. Sophie, our lead designer and founder, connected with her instantly, sharing a similar background. Together, we selected a piece of landscape art that brought the light and spaciousness of the outdoors into her bedroom. The art served as a focal point, drawing the eye and creating a calming atmosphere in the midst of the urban environment. This project exemplifies how art can be used to borrow a landscape, transforming an ordinary space into a sanctuary.

Enhancing real views with art

But art isn’t just a solution for those without a view—it can also enhance existing views. Recently, we styled a main living area with a panoramic view of Melbourne’s leafy hills. The room was fortunate to have a wall of windows, allowing for a breathtaking view. However, directly opposite the windows was a long, blank wall. To complement the natural scenery, we filled this wall with landscape art that mirrored the view outside. The result? Whether the blinds are open or closed, there’s always a sense of looking out onto an expansive, picturesque scene. The art doesn’t just mimic the view; it amplifies it, creating a seamless blend between indoors and outdoors.
